Explaining The Fairytale Brownie Recipe | Conceptual Recipe

by - September 03, 2017

We recently made a creative video for a competition. It was my children's efforts purely. They took an old brownie recipe of mine and turned it into a special meaningful, and metaphorical recipe with a strange concept.

The video gets right into it as soon as it starts. We are introduced to this frame in which different ingredients come together. The background music is chilling, with sound effects of the forest to further its ritualistic theme. The ingredients are kind of sacrificed as soon as they enter the bowl, that's the emotion they were going for. The poem really helps clarify that.
Here it is:

All good things come with a price
The gods want the darkness to see the fire
and melt away before it

The necessities and the luxuries come together

and mothers watch as little lives wither
the essence of the sacrifice is reminded before
flowers blossom in this darkness
while the bitter ones remain unchanged

their pedestal stands decorated
with the finest linen sheets
they march into the flames for the final good deed
the heat presented them with many a great battles
and the folks grew impatient and rattled

out of the fire rises something beautiful
the bitter, the sweet,
the dark and the light
the living and the burnt

made into something of delight

Explanation:

the necessities and the luxuries come together- sugar and butter reference- how one is a necessity and one is a luxury, but they both come together for this recipe
and mothers watch as little lives wither- reference to eggs
the essence of the sacrifice is reminded before- translates into "we add vanilla essence before"
flowers blossom in this darkness- all purpose flour is added to this chocolaty(dark) mixture
while the bitter ones remain unchanged- the cocoa powder is still bitter
their pedestal stands decorated with the finest linen sheets- the baking tray is supposed to be layered with butter paper
they march into the flames for the final good deed- put into the oven so these different ingredients come together as one- the final good deed
the heat presented them with many a great battles- reference to the ritual
